Sephora Favorites: Give me Some Nude Lip Review with swatches

0-cover

I have so many lip products and yet… I still want more. I want to try more brands and more colors, and most importantly I need to be wear them during my average day. As health care provider I need to look professional, put together… and yet indulge my desire for style. So give me more nude lip, Sephora! If you’re into the nude look and wondering if this kit is worth it (and you want some sweet dupes) then stay tuned… Let’s play!

What I want in my everyday lip…

My lips are unevenly pigmented, and not very vibrant when I don’t get enough sleep. I love a nude lip because it evens out the dark rim of pigment around my lips so they’re a nice uniform color. They’re easy to match with outfits, and can be worn during any occasion. In terms of formula, I do like my lip products to be long lasting… but also I have very dry lips. I can’t handle the ultra drying formulas, and at present my ideal formula is the ultra satin lip from colourpop, specifically in the shade dopey. I do like cream lipsticks, but I don’t wear them as much as liquid formulas. .. I’m thinking for this review I’ll try the blotting technique to make them longer lasting.

Buxom Full-On Lip Cream  “White Russian”

7. Buxom Full on lip cream WHITE RUSSIAN.jpg

This Buxom lip gloss has an intense minty sensation bordering on the numbing side. I didn’t experience much pain with this lip plumper, but I also didn’t notice any more plumpness to my lips. It has a stickiness to it that isn’t overly sticky, but rather, it helps the product stick to the lips. The name “White Russian” is fairly accurate. The gloss is an icy pink color, which I would think looks terrible on me, but it was actually very pretty! I think it lets enough of my natural lip color through that it doesn’t completely wash out my lips but adds a nice shine, and long lasting moisture.

The only negative think I have to say about this gloss is that if you stupidly apply it right before eating something… and you eat like a messy beast… you might get a little of that menthol-y numbing on your tongue. #WhenYouLoveLipProducts #ButYouAlsoLoveFood…

Best for: Moisturizing in the winter, Natural Gloss look, Easy lip days, Longwearing (sans meals)

Personal bias: You get a nice deluxe sized sample of this gloss, which gets a lot of hype, so I think this is well worth the value in this kit! Grade: A+!

Estée Edit The Barest Contour lip Liner “05 In The Buff”

I’m honestly not the biggest fan of lip liner…. I understand its purpose, and definite use it with bolder lip looks to create a perfect edge. When it comes to nudes however, I feel that the beauty of a nude lip is that it’s an easy everyday look. Why would I want to add another step with a liner? I know my mom used liners to extend the wear time of creamier formulas, and I think that this product might actually be useful for that purpose. As you can tell by the picture it is ULTRA sticky. If you press your lips together your lips with STICK. Applying a lipstick on top remediates the issue, and maybe the stickiness will STICK the formula to the liner? Some beauty gurus swear by a nude liner to plump up the lips, but the color is a little dark to overdraw with for me. Formula wise it is creamy, but a liiiiitle difficult to apply as it goes on the lips as it has a tendency to stick to the surface of your skin.

Best for: Lining a darker nude lip look

Personal bias: If I wanted to bother with nude liners I might like this product but… I keep you guys updated! As of now, I don’t really have a use for this. It will probably sit in my drawer for a while without use. Not worth the money for me…Grade: D-

Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick “HoneyComb”

Lip Swatch of HoneyComb

This creamy formula is super moisturizing, which I love during the winter. It is not particularly long lasting, but works fairly well if you use the blotting trick. (Essentially you apply, blot with a tissue, and then apply on top again for a longer wear for creamy lipsticks) I have tried this formula, and other Bite’s Amuse Bouche lipsticks before (click here for more colors with swatches!)… and to be honest this color is my least favorite. Something about the color being lighter than my natural shade makes it seem patchy as little bits of my natural lip color show through as the creamy formula moves around. Because the light colors leave no stain, it’s not forgiving even when a little of my lip color shows through.

Also this color is a little more muted than I prefer… It’s my exact skin tone if I were about 3-4shades darker. It’s a light tan/brown shade which might go well with a super smokey brown eye look, but if worn wrong… you could look really sick!

Best for: Moisturizing in the winter, Skin-tone nude looks, trying this infamous food-grade formula, Mixing with darker lips and highlighting the center of the lip

Personal bias: I might be giving this one away to a friend that looks better in it… I don’t think it looks great with my warm toned, light-medium skin tone. Grade: C+

Too Faced Cosmetics Melted Matte Liquified Matte Long Wear Lipstick in Queen B

2. Too faced Melted Matte QUEEN B.jpg

The color of this is absolutely boootiful. As you can see it’s a tiny bit lighter than the colourpop in dopey, and it’s a COMPLETELY MATTE formula.  I wore this through a 13 hour shift at the hospital and it wore well up until eating, and even after then it wore off forgivingly. My lips were VERY dry at the end of the day, but honestly that’s how they would be without chapstick anyways. I definitely think that I’ll keep this in the rotation for 5-6 hour outings on more natural looking days. This mauvey pink dream is everything I wanted in a nude lipstick, super flattering for my warm skin tone.

Best for: Day time shopping trips, Natural nude look, For those with lips that do not normally dry out

Personal bias: if this formula was slightly more moisturizing I would wear it everyday because it stick to the lips SOOO well. I will definitely be applying a chapstick over this one so the grade is…. A-!

Marc Jacobs Beauty Le Marc Lip Crème “246 Slow Burn”

5. Marc Jacobs Le Marc SLOW BURN.jpg

This lipstick is a creamy formula that is slightly less moisturizing than your classic cream lipstick. Fortunately, this feature allows it to stick onto the lips a little better throughout the day! The lipstick does transfer a little, but is relatively resistant to drinking lots of water. After meals it does wear off in the inner lips, but since it is a nude color it doesn’t look too bad. I LOVED the color but then I realized that it looked very similar to the Too Faced lipstick… and some of the other nudes I own… SO I decided to go through my collection and swatch side by side some of the colors for a nice comparison! (See above) It throws a slightly warmer tone than the too faced but overall pretty similar.

Best for: Everyday color if you don’t mind reapplying after meals.

Personal bias: Creamy nude? You know I’m biased…. A-

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in 1993 Comfort Matte

4. Urban Decay Comfort Matte 1993.jpg

This is a straight up milk chocolate brown color…. It really looks terrible on me at full opacity. But I don’t mind the way it looks dotted onto my lips with a balm. Color aside, the formula is nice and creamy… but when It’s built up it has these strange clumps in it. The blotting trick does work with this lipstick for longer wear if you want to make this formula last all day! I would say that this is more of a Satin than a Matte formula… However… isn’t this the way lipstick goes? If you’re not crazy about the shade you don’t reach for it. I might be giving this one away to someone who would appreciate this more. It’s a shame that this is the largest item you get in here (product amount wise)

Best for: those who appreciate brown lipstick, those with a more medium skin tone

Personal bias: Is this a nude? I don’t think so…. Grade: D-

Overall the set is well worth the buy for me because I’ll be utilizing almost all of the colors on a daily basis. If you are light to medium skin tone these colors will probably look as pictured on your skin.. If you have ultra pale or very deep skin tone these colors will probably have a different personality on you! There was 1 shade too light for me, and 1 shade too dark so it seems to be targeted for a range of skin tones. If you wanted to try a variety of formulas in wearable shades this is the time to do it… for $28? Not bad at all Sephora!
